Why do I get extremely sleepy after eating beef jerky?

beef jerky
jammie s asked:

I looked on the nutrition facts to see the sugar content, but it’s only 6 cabs per serving and I only eat 1-2 servings. I don’t eat much protien normally and there is 12 grams in 1 serving of jerky….I just don’t get why protien would make me so sleepy, but it does it every time!

I think the reason you get tired is because in turkey there is this kind of natural chemical which makes you sleepy. Maybe there is the same chemical in the beef jerkey…

Dried meats in general take more energy to digest. They are more dense then say the same weight of steak. While you digest the blood gathers in your stomach around the organs while they work feeding them oxygen this causes a slight decrease in the blood oxygen going to your brain and that makes you feel sleepy.

Its like eating a really huge meal.. you always get sleepy then too dontcha ?

Many people have a reaction to MSG, the flavor enhancer found in most jerkies. Try a teaspoon of Accent sometime and see if you have similar results.
